Psychiatric nursing: analysis of the Manual de Cuidados aos Psychopathas

The article concerns nursing in a psychiatric hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The author analyses the 1930 Manual de Cuidados aos Psychopathas and concludes that nursing played a fundamental role in the consolidation of the asylum model, with nursing staff largely untrained in nursing and characterised by the enforcement of medical knowledge with disregard for patients' identity and individuality.
